Model for DOTAL
The Distance Online Technology Assisted Learning (DOTAL) committee serves as an ongoing advisory committed to establish and maintain a viable distance online and technology assisted learning for students attending Heritage University. Several members are grouped to develop specific aspects of its overall goals and missions. Developing a model to assist in the delivery of instruction through various approaches from face to face, blended, asynchronous and/or synchronous however, requires feedback. In the spirit of social media and belief in the wisdom of the crowd, submitted is a proposed model.
In developing this model, literature review of the initial developments of mobile learning models first published since the 1980’s are considered with the existing Conceptual Framework model developed within this institution, specifically Teacher Education. The strength of the Conceptual Framework previously discussed (Wheaton, 2011) serves as a supporting structure for the development of a model for DOTAL. See below:
Overlaying the FRAME model (Koole, 2009) on the existing conceptual framework required little adjustment. As most models, little interpretation is needed. The visual should support understanding. What is not well defined in the model, and a considered weakness, is expression of the required approach to teaching. Applying traditional teaching approaches, lecture, will result in failure of the purpose of mobile technology. Concern here, is that constructivist approach to learning is not enough. Siemens’ Connectivism approach is better or consideration to other approaches such as, Flipped Classroom, Project-based, Project-challenged, to name a few. I ask for guidance among my colleagues with this dilemma. Thank you.

Re: Conceptual Framework for Mobile Learning?
The Koole FRAME Model was presented by Anne to the DOTAL Subcommittee, "Technology Delivery Model Development." Her idea has been incorporated into the planning document for the goal. The FRAME model appears to a powerful addition to the conceptual framework. Cathy Hardison

Re: Conceptual Framework for Mobile Learning?
Hi, Anne, As I mentioned when you showed me the framework, I liked the concept. There are two adjustments that I hope you and the committee will consider. Social Justice is a powerful central component of the framework which can be a philosophical focus of online learning as easily as it can be a focus of brick-and-mortar learning. I would urge you not to dilute that powerful focus by putting mobile learning at the center. My argument is that while mobile learning can be a tool for promoting social justice and while access to mobile learning can be a social justice issue, social justice is a broader category that includes much more than mobile learning. For instance, in my current online class, we are considering social justice issues such as freedom of religion, bullying, cultural competence, power in the classroom, along with others. If we conflate social justice with mobile learning, we lose some of the power of the original idea.
Sincerely, Apanakhi
