The Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning is a broad-based program of advanced preparation of master teachers anticipating a career of leadership in the classroom, and/or educators who wish to pursue graduate study in their specialty area beyond the bachelor’s degree. Degree requirements include 22 core credits in the areas of effective teaching and classroom leadership focused on student learning, the role of the teacher as instructional leader and in school improvement processes, social and philosophical foundations of education, and, application of technology to research and best educational practices. To provide additional opportunity for professional growth and development, a 10 credit elective segment allows candidates to select one or more areas of special interest or need for further study.
Program Goals
The program builds upon the Heritage University mission to prepare educators to positively impact learning for all students by developing leadership, knowledge, skills, and dispositions for the following:
1. Utilizing foundational knowledge to address state learning goals and essential academic learning requirements.
2. Applying current research and best practice in quality teaching and learning to encourage the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.
3. Creating instructional opportunities adapted to learners from diverse cultural backgrounds and/or students with exceptional challenges.
4. Building learning communities of school colleagues, parents, and agencies to support students’ learning and well-being.
5. Contributing to the development of plans for school improvement.
6. Utilizing educational technology, including computers and other technologies, in instruction, assessment, and professional productivity.
7. Utilizing this professional development opportunity to reflect on his/her teaching and its effects on student growth and learning.

Professional Studies in Teaching and Learning with National Board Certified Teacher Preparation: 32 credits
A broadly based major designed to meet the needs of a certified teacher with three or more years of teaching who desires to become a National Board Certified Teacher. Successful completion of National Board Certified Teacher Certification meets the Professional Certification standards for the State of Washington. Teachers who wish to obtain a Master of Education degree have the opportunity to earn the degree as well as prepare for submission of their individual work products to the National Board for certification. Students will meet in a cohort model and be able to network across the state with other teachers in the same certification area.
Degree requirements include 22 core credits in the areas of educational foundations, effective teaching and classroom leadership focused on student learning, current research and best practice, parental collaboration and responsiveness to diverse community interests, school improvement planning, and educational technology. Educators completing this program will receive the knowledge, necessary tools, and support to be successful in the challenging work of effectively teaching and working with English language learners.
The program is designed to do the following:

- Apply current research and instructional strategies designed to increase student achievement of all English language learners in schools with the effect of closing the achievement gap.
