Teacher Professional Certification: 6 Credits

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) and the Washington State Legislature are changing teacher certification requirements. Currently, students with Resident Teaching Certificates pursuing the Professional Teaching Certificate must complete a ProCert program through a state-approved university program. Candidates complete program requirements, and the university certification officer recommends to the state that the candidate receive the Professional Certificate. This process changed January 1, 2010. Candidates now have the option of completing the ProTeach Portfolio requirements on their own and sending their electronic portfolios to the state for evaluation and recommendation of the Professional Teaching Certificate. In the second option, teachers pursuing the Professional Teaching Certificate will have to complete requirements through the university and have the university certification officer submit their names to the state for the Professional Certificate. However, September 1, 2011, will mark the beginning of the external assessment process for ALL teachers holding a Residency Teaching Certificate. Teachers will have the option of completing ProTeach Portfolio requirements individually or through a state-approved support program. Professional certificate candidates will be responsible for submitting their ProTeach Portfolios and the evaluation fee, following guidelines set by the PESB. A note for Advanced Track Candidates: There will be no advanced track option. All students with Resident Teaching Certificates, regardless of prior teaching experience, will complete the ProTeach Portfolio and submit it for evaluation.
