The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation sponsors the Mellon Minority Undergraduate
Fellowship Program at Heritage. The program offers financial support to upper
division students for a wide variety of activities. The program goal is
to encourage students to continue their education past baccalaureate level
studies to Ph.D. granting graduate school studies. Students receive a summer
stipend of $3000 to pursue enrichment undergraduate research and community
service projects. They also receive $1600 in academic scholarships over
the fall/spring semesters.
Each year, students are selected for Mellon fellowships on a competitive basis.
A call for nominees is issued each spring semester to the department chairs,
EAGLES, ASB, and the presidents of student organizations. Any student may
apply. The criteria for acceptance into to the program is upper division standing
(60 or more 100 and above course credits), a GPA of 3.0 or better, statement
of intent to pursue a doctoral degree and two favorable reference letters.
Approximately 5 fellows are selected every year. Awards are for two years.
