As we enter into harvest season in the lower Yakima Valley please be especially patient, cautious and smart as you are driving to, from or around campus. The trucks and various equipment used as a part of the harvest can often be operating outside the common traffic laws. As one local grower said, “Do not expect them to stop at stops signs and be prepared for them to stop unexpectedly in the middle of the road.”
Sometimes they are moving very fast so beware when pulling out. And sometimes they are moving very slowly, so be patient. Heavy equipment often does not offer the best sight lines for the drivers and they can sometimes turn unexpectedly, even when there is no obvious place to turn in to, so be prepared for unexpected driving tactics.
Let’s all make an effort to get where we are going in one piece. Keep your eyes on the road, your foot light on gas and heavy on the brakes, your hands on the wheel, and your head in the game. Let’s all be smart and safe.
As always, if you have any questions, ask someone.
