David Lampton provides a fresh perspective from which to assess China -- how its strengths are changing, where vulnerabilities and uncertainties lie, and how we should view it.  He includes a valuable historical framework by showing how 2,500 years of state power have evolved into the phenomenon we see today from China's venture into capitalism to its future power through initiatives such as a space program.
