About the Interdisciplinary Studies Program
Heritage University has collaborated with Big Bend Community College to provide students with a broad and comprehensive program that emphasizes strong communication skills, human relationship analysis, understanding social and political contexts and organizational leadership. This program is intended for students undecided on their career path who have already received a transferrable Associate of Arts Degree from BBCC or another institution and wish to earn their Bachelor of Arts through Heritage.
The Interdisciplinary Studies major focuses on English, primarily in the technical aspects of writing and in-depth literature studies. The secondary concentration is course work related to sociology, political science and organizational leadership. The combination of all the above provides students with strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Upon completing the program, students are well prepared for supervisory, management and leadership-based careers in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, businesses and more.
The curriculum also requires service in the Central Washington community that relates to the student's area of studies. It gives any field real-world relevance and encourages students to demonstrate competency in a career they are considering, an integral part of their motivation and success. Heritage’s professional connections also foster opportunities for internships locally, regionally and nationally and provide networks well beyond graduation.
Heritage has always been a pioneer in developing culturally conscious programs. Within each discipline, courses are built in that ties cultural relevance to the specific area of student. Education about, working with and appreciating diversity is a hallmark of the Heritage Experience.
The Heritage Difference
This degree utilizes a blended online program, meaning a hybrid of virtual and physical student/teacher interactions and online classes, making it ideal for place-bound students. Heritage's investment in a productive virtual environment facilitates optimum learning and encourages interaction between peers and educators. The program is also flexible for working students, as traditional classroom time is scheduled in the evenings and weekends.
